Women in Leadership Women in LeadershipMichelle Odle
McMaster Urban Dance Company Performance Coach / Choreographer

Michelle Odle first took on leadership roles in camp counselling and varsity sports, both involving immense teamwork and communication. Being part of a team, meeting new people, and belonging to an organization made leading worthwhile. Odle is also motivated to lead for things she is passionate about – dance, and believes it is important for people who want to get a message across to advocate it through action. Odle strives to accomplish her own goals as McMaster’s Urban Dance Company Performance Coach and Choreographer through active leadership. She is currently determined to make McMaster a cutting edge university for dance, while easing the conflict students experience when trying to balance dancing with difficult academic programs. Odle is also seeking to create more dance courses for McMaster students. The most gratifying leadership experiences for Odle involve others opening up their lives to her so she can pass on her knowledge to them, as in overnight camp counseling. Currently, in McMaster’s Centre for Dance, Odle finds it most inspiring to see the progression of something she helped start. To experience this fulfillment from leadership, one must have initiative, be able to see the ‘holes’ and attempt to solve them, and command as well as give respect. Odle believes that to be a great leader, one must be able to see the big picture and break it down. Little steps must be taken, which can be as gratifying as the end product.
