Women in Leadership Women in LeadershipMary Williams
Associate Vice-President, McMaster University Advancement

Mary Williams, associate vice-president of University Advancement at McMaster University, is also a proud McMaster grad. Back in her days as an undergraduate student, Mary has been heavily involved with the Students Representative Assembly, Intercollegiate Athletic Council, etc. After working for the Ministry of Health for a few years, Mary decided to return to her roots and works for her alma mater. Mary very much enjoys her work at University Advancement because it provides her with the opportunity to work with a high-performance team, whose every day work has a significant impact on the well-being of students and the life of the University. The support and money they raise for the university helps to ensure that McMaster can attract the best students, hire great faculty members, and so much more in support for fulfilling the University’s mission and vision.
Mary’s success as a leader is a combination of at least three factors. First, she believes in what she does— as she identifies strongly with the importance of post-secondary education.

Second, she believes great leaders needs to have vision— and this includes the ability to have others to share your vision. But most important of all--- she believes in the importance of mentors. Mary believes every leader has a mentor, someone that they can look up to and help them develop their leadership skills throughout this life-long leadership development process and she also believes that every leader has a responsibility to mentor others as they develop their own leadership style.
