Women in Leadership Women in LeadershipHeather LaBute
McMaster Student Health Education Centre (SHEC) Coordinator

Heather LaBute began her leadership experiences within her high school’s student council, where she took on the Senior Events Coordinator position. Representing her school, planning all related events, and being rewarded for her remarkable efforts encouraged LaBute to continue in her leadership endeavors. LaBute later attended the Ontario Educational Leadership Camp, where she worked on essential leadership skills, such as teamwork, time and stress management. Being a natural born leader, LaBute tends to gravitate towards roles involving excitement, challenges, and responsibility. The uncertainty of future outcomes and the potential impact her leadership roles may have, motivate her to continue leading throughout life. LaBute’s current role as the Student Health Education Centre (SHEC) Coordinator at McMaster not only requires reflection upon prior leadership experiences, but also allows her to flourish as a leader through working with some of the most dedicated student volunteers. As a SHEC Coordinator, LaBute has gained new experiences and knowledge to maintain confidence as a woman leader and avoid ‘sweating the small stuff’. She believes that a great leader not only leads by example by demonstrating tolerance and understanding, but also knows what she is talking about, and talks about what she knows. Most importantly, LaBute believes that a great leader always maintains self-esteem with anyone she deals with – all qualities which Heather LaBute displays as the SHEC Coordinator at McMaster.
