Abstract

The need for communication between pathologists is evident and up to now has presented an excessive amount of handicaps. New telecommunication technologies, especially those based on the Internet offer new opportunities which especially benefit Surgical Pathology among other branches of Pathology. It is not per chance that the first virtual meetings have been those elaborated through Pathology, at least within the Hispanic-speaking community (http://www.conganat.org), that pathologist list-serves (Patho-L, L-anatpat) are presently some of the most active or that new specialty communication forums such as text-conference are being developed (http://www.uni-net.org). The benefits of this type of communication improvement towards aid, education, and research are creating a new image for the specialty. Among other aid-based innovations it is appropriate to emphasize the development of varied tele-pathology systems, from image transmission between pathologists utilized in the consultation of especially difficult cases to robotic microscope systems coupled with video cameras used for the diagnostic of intraoperatory biopsies in those centers which lack pathologists. All of this requires the clarification and definition of acceptable security limits.
