Occupational Health - Public Health Poster Session
Polyurethane (PU) and polyurethane foams (PUF) are polymers, widely spread practically in all branches of industry during last decades. Therefore many workers are exposed to components of PU and PUF. Various types PU and PUF consist of more than 100 chemical substances with neurotropic, irritant and toxic properties. Some of PU and PUF components have specific properties (allergic, embryotropic). Many of these components can penetrate human skin. We studied working conditions and their influence on worker's health at more than 30 industrial enterprises where PU and PUF were used. The aim of investigation was to develop a system of measures to provide safe work conditions. Laboratory methods for detection PU and PUF components in workplace air were elaborated. We revealed typical lacks in technology, plant lay-out, ventilation etc., that formed hazardous factors in numeral enterprises and therefore resulted in real danger for workers' health. Basing on these investigations, a system of measures was developed to provide safe work conditions for enterprises where PU was used. The system includes: selection of less hazardous raw materials for PU and PUF, hygienic requirements to industrial plants designing, preventive and current sanitary inspection, including sanitary inspection of individual protective equipment, strengthening of sanitary inspection of work environment hazardous factors.
