Scope

Introduction
The portal is focused on delivering value to students and the features planned for the portal are in response to a survey conducted in August 2005 to which over 5,000 students responded. At first, some systems (like MUGSI) will be delivered as is, but through the portal to achieve one-stop shopping and single sign-on. Later these will be redesigned for more integrated functionality and visual standards.

Phases and Deliverables
The portal project will be delivered in phases. The first will be delivered in late September or early October and will prove key infrastructure components by implementing a variety of features including Identity Management to allow a single sign-on to each of the following:

  • All existing MUGSI functionality (without any change to the look and feel)
  • Course timetable and grade report (recently extracted from MUGSI to be delivered through the portal)
  • An on-line calendar where students can enter their own events and share events with others
  • Co-curricular record
  • Searchable Master Course Timetable
  • An e-mail client
  • Library search (may not be able to provide access to e-resources for this phase)

A later release will provide additional features including:

  • WebCT Integration
  • Federated Search
  • MacExpress meal-card value top-up as a demonstration of e-payment integration
  • Application Status and other information to assist incoming students
  • Enhancement of the grade report to provide grade information previously only available on transcripts
  • Special Requests (admission to a full course, graduation, exam conflict resolution, etc.)
  • Integration with CLASS
Note: It was originally expected that LearnLink and a personalized booklist would be implemented. The LearnLink system’s proprietary structure does not appear to allow a single sign-on. The personalized booklist depends on having the Registration by Section system in operation but that system has been delayed.
