Expert warns of growing crisis in Mali: ‘We might just be creating a new Afghanistan’
Hamilton, Ont. January 21, 2013—Bonny Ibhawoh, a McMaster University professor who specializes in African history and global human rights issues, is available for comment on the deepening crisis in Mali.
“From the global perspective, we might just be creating a new Afghanistan,” he says. “I think much of the discussion now is about pre-empting that and dealing with rising tensions before it becomes a global crisis.”
“If Afghanistan has taught us any lessons, these regional conflicts can no longer been seen as just trouble in remote parts of the world,” he says.
Ibhawoh can be reached directly at ibhawoh@mcmaster.ca (prefers email). Alternately, he can be reached at (905) 525-9140, ext. 24638.
