EXPERT ADVISORY: Expert in Islam available to discuss the context and significance of Ramadan

HAMILTON, June 18, 2015: Liyakat Takim, holder of the Sharjah Chair in Global Islam at McMaster University, is available to discuss the significance of Ramadan, a month-long Islamic observance that begins today, and covers the longest days of the year, presenting a particular challenge to Muslims who fast from sunrise to sundown.

"Today, Thursday June 18, Muslims all over the world mark the beginning of the month of Ramadan, the month of fasting. They will not eat or drink anything from dawn to dusk. This is a very holy month for Muslims as it is the month when the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It also contains the night of power when, it is believed, some events in their lives are destined," says Takim.

"Fasting is important for Muslims as it engenders a sense of discipline, enabling them to exercise self-control so as to purify their souls. Fasting also helps them empathize with the plight of those who are less fortunate. During this month, Muslims are also encouraged to feed the poor, helping thereby to establish a just social order."

Liyakat Takim is available for interviews today and can be reached at ltakim@mcmaster.ca.
