The 2012-2013 year marked an exciting new start for the McMaster Alumni Association Board of Directors. It was the first installation of a newly adopted structure for the board with the implementation of the 2012 MAA constitution, a fresh approach to their work and the introduction of a number of new members. After much reflection and review in the previous year, it was time now to put ideas into practice and execute on our goals for a revitalized Board focussed on impactful work.
HOMECOMING Saturday, October 13 offered a perfect backdrop to bringing the new Board back to campus and together for the first time. The morning meeting focussed on orientation for new members to the Alumni Association, to University Advancement operations and to the current environment and priorities of the University. Dr. Deane addressed the Board and discussed their unique position to assist the University in delivering on key priorities identified within Forward with Integrity, including community engagement. The Board identified their role as ambassadors for the University; forwarding the University’s message within their community; encouraging engagement of alumni and others in the life of the University. The Board also identified the development of the next three-year strategic plan as their key priority for the year.
The Board then had the opportunity to meet and mingle with former MAA presidents as together we cheered on our winning Marauders on the field.
IN JANUARY, the Board took the opportunity to explore their goals and ambitions for the Association with a strategic planning session. Through a morning’s facilitated session, we discovered that we were strongly aligned with members’ interests in better engaging alumni, in fostering a connectedness and relevance throughout one’s life-cycle of their relationship with McMaster – beginning before they arrive and continuing long after their formal studies have finished.
THE SECOND FULL BOARD MEETING took place on a Saturday afternoon in March and provided an opportunity for Board members and Office of Alumni Advancement staff to meet, discuss their work and get to know one another. Both volunteers and staff enjoyed the interaction. A draft of the strategic plan was then presented for discussion. The suggestions and refinements offered here were then incorporated into the Strategic Plan to be approved by the Board. Comments and feedback on the approved plan found on the next slide are welcome.

125 Anniversary
The University’s milestone anniversary provided an excellent opportunity to showcase McMaster and many pride-building points we have to share. Alumni learned about the University’s people, growth, research and history. Special events including a community engagement event, Open Streets Hamilton: McMaster Edition showcased the campus and its facilities as well as the variety of opportunities that exist for all community members to be involved with McMaster. A highlight was certainly the evening at the Royal Conservatory of Music, the location of McMaster’s first home. McMaster students throughout the ages shared their McMaster experiences while the sounds of McMaster’s student a cappela group performed renditions of former and current McMaster songs and cheers. It was a grand way to pay tribute to our founder and our first 125 years.
Vanier Cup Pre-Game
Alumni and McMaster fans of all descriptions enjoyed following a fantastic season for the McMaster Marauder football team. The anticipation for a second Vanier Cup competition built steadily through the Fall and on November 23 we gathered in Toronto in a sea of maroon and grey with Marauder spirit overflowing. It was a unique opportunity with just a week’s notice to host a pride-raising party for 500 eager Marauder fans. McMaster alumni supported their team and felt a renewed sense of pride in donning their maroon and grey and cheering, Go MAC Go!
Class of 1962
Not to be outdone, the Class of 1962 celebrated their 50th reunion on Alumni Weekend with the biggest 50th reunion event! 129 alumni and guests gathered to reminisce and dine in the historic Convocation Hall. Amongst the attendees to celebrate their reunion were Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Myron Scholes and current Chancellor, Dr. Lynton “Red” Wilson. Dr. Scholes also delivered an economics lecture to a riveted audience of students, alumni, faculty and guests earlier in the day.
Virtually there...
In an effort to eliminate distance as a barrier to participation in our programming, we have purchased webinar software and have offered our first webinars for job search assistance. We will continue to evolve in this space and expand offerings to address needs of alumni who aren’t able to attend traditional events. In addition, we can also share an insider’s perspective on events with a number of alumni starting to share blogs of their experience at alumni events. So, it’s almost like being there!
