INTRODUCTION

INFORMATION SOURCES

Due to economical difficulties, our Center has been quite limited in financial resources for buying scientific journals and/or books.

The development of the INTERNET and discussion lists, groups etc., has provided a very good alternative for this situation.

A year ago, our information staff began to search in these groups for the right and adequate information in order to update the network’s professionals and also to disseminate information in our Teleconferences.

The first group we joined was E-Drug, obtaining substantial information from its archives.

Afterwards, full Internet access was provided by Health Ministry and other sites and interest groups were found.

Currently our center is only subscribed to two important medical journals

The Lancet and

The New England Journal of Medicine,

And two bulletins:

Drugs and Therapeutics Newsletter

The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics.

Even though, with this small amount of printed references, information is currently updated and continuously flowing to the Net.

Lately, The Cochrane Library was kindly donated by Cochrane’s Group in Spain.

Each month a Teleconference is given from Havana City to all municipalities with the   participation of very well  known personalities of each Medical Specialty who give lectures about a frequent topic in Primary Care.

This Teleconferences have a total participation of about 200 to 300 people from the whole Country and from different profiles: family physicians, specialists, pharmacists, health deciders, health officers, etc., and very good feedback is achieved.

In every teleconference pharmacological news are given about different issues in drugs, as they are drug alerts, new drugs approved, drugs withdrawn, new adverse reactions to old and new drugs, new profiles.

Also a bulletin is bimonthly edited and distributed to the whole Primary care system, which involves the totality of the country.

Electronic distribution is performed to those net members who have e-mail. We expect to create an intarnet within  the network, but up to now it has been impossible for material reasons, as many of the services don’t have PCs.

INFORMATICS PROGRAMS

Informatic department is headed by an engineer and a system analyst. This department develops software to organize and control drug distribution, availability, utilization and also for researches.

The following programs have been developed:

DHD Calculation:

(doses x 1000 inhabitants)

Any DHD for every registered drug can be obtained at any moment by clients, in the time period needed (week, month, year) based in the drug’s DDD for utilization.

Utilization System:

Provides the utilization of any drug in physical units, as desired by the user and allows to know which drug were the most purchased within that period.

Control card System:

Allows to know the number of patients using a determined drug for chronic diseases   in each province, municipality and the whole country. Also is possible to know the local and National rates of controlled patients.

Drug Distribution system:

After a drug is produced by national pharmaceutical Industry it is distributed to all the Country, taking in account the necessity of each province, by this mean distribution is guaranteed with equity and control.

Alert System:

Allows to know when a drug is going to be unavailable and the industry’s production can be reoriented towards the needs.

Information System for Health Ministry:

Is a total of data that feedback the central level of health system revealing how the pharmaceutical industry is working, distribution, exports, donations and allowing to make the adequate decisions by health authorities in the precise moment.
