Abstract

Nolder ® is a commercial dietary supplement composed of phospholipids, acetylcarnitine, l-glutamine and antioxidants (vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium). All these components, taken singularly, have proven some effect in the prevention/treatment of the clinical or biochemical manifestations correlable with dementia. Aim of this study was to evaluate whether the administration of a compound dietary supplement could have any effect on the clinical conditions of patients with mild or moderate dementia. Twenty patients (7 M, mean age 72) with presenile or senile dementia (14 'mild', 6 'moderate' according to the Global Deterioration Scale) were treated for two months with two sachets of the above mentioned compound. The tests performed at T0 and T60 were the widely used 'Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)' and the 'Index of Mental Decline (IMD)'. Both the MMSE and the IMD scores showed a statistically and clinically significant improvement. At a subgroup analysis the patients that seemed to benefit more were in the patients with 'mild' dementia, while the improvement in the more serious patients did not reach the level of significance . Even with all the limitations of an open pilot study with a small sample size, these results look very promising and suggest the opportunity of further controlled randomized trials.
