Abstract

The therapeutical effects of naturally occurring carbonated water were already known in the fourth century a.D. Carbonic acid was said to have 'healing powers'- even in cases of 'skin rashes' and 'ulcers'. At present the following effects of the use of carbonic acid are discussed: 1. Dilatation of vessels (capillaries and precapillaries) 2. Improvement of blood rheology 3. Influence on thermoreceptors 4. Antisepsis In this study we want to examine the reparative effect of CO2 impregnated water in patients with atopic dermatitis. As control groups we selected patients with similarly pronounced dermatitis treated with combined UVA/UVB radiation and salt-water bath (the clinical manifestations are comparable and evaluated by the SCORAD Index). Altogether we first included 30 patients. Our patients take a CO2 impregnated bath with 37oC temperature and a pH value of 5.4 for 10 minutes three times a week. We determined a 2 week observation period. As parameter to document the progress of the atopic dermatitis we chose the SCORAD Index. Our aim is to evaluate whether a bath of CO2 impregnated water can be an alternative (supportive) therapeutical method in the treatment of (severe) atopic dermatitis. The preliminary results show a positive tendency concerning the course of the disease.
