WCAG 2.0 AA Compliance

Section 1.4.3

The visual presentation of text and images of text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1

Exceptions to this rule are as follows:

  • Large scale text (with a size of 18 point or larger) and images of large scale text have a contrast ratio of at least 3:1
  • Text or images of text that aren't part of the user interface, provide decoration, that aren't visible to anyone, or are part of a bigger picture don't have a contrast requirement.
  • Logo text has no minimum contrast requirement.

When this rule refers to a "contrast ratio," you should be looking at the colour of your font in comparison to the background colour. A great tool to check your contrasts is by using WebAIM's Colour Contrast Checker. It will give you the numerical value of the contrast ratio as well as if it passes or fails the WCAG AA and WCAG AAA standard. You should try to aim for AAA compliance.
