Zero-Mile Diet: Growing Food in Your Own Backyard

Russell Ohrt

We have all heard that locally-grown food is fresher, tastier and more environmentally responsible. It doesn't get much fresher than growing food in your own garden.  Our speaker, Russ Ohrt, will lead us through basic steps of picking a good garden site, preparing the soil, and selecting the right tools and plants to lead to a crop of delicious backyard treats. For those without a yard, Russ will also discuss container gardening and community gardening opportunities.

Russ Ohrt started his ongoing agricultural education as an apprentice on small scale organic, Biodynamic and old-order Mennonite farms.  For the last five years, Russ has worked in urban agriculture and community development, and he has helped form the Hamilton Community Garden Network.  He also puts his methods into practice, and growing much of his family's produce in his own modest urban garden.
