Expert doubts ceasefire between Russia, Ukraine can hold, predicts renewed fighting spring

HAMILTON, February 11, 2015: John Colarusso, a professor in the departments of Anthropology and Linguistics & Languages at McMaster, and an expert in Russian politics, is available to discuss the ceasefire accord reached this morning, which is set to begin Sunday.

"An agreement will provide a hiatus to the fighting, but it will not end Russia's pursuit of compromising Ukrainian sovereignty," says Colarusso.

"Tensions will persist and more fighting is likely in the spring. In effect, these talks will not solve the problem of Russia's quest to regain its former position as a world power which, for the moment, is focused on Ukraine."

Colarusso has spent more than two decades advising policy makers in Moscow, Washington, Ottawa and the Causasus. He can be reached at colaruss@mcmaster.ca or 905-515-6515.
