Your data nicely demonstrate that HO-1 is altered in brain by adverse conditions (kainic acid, ischemia), and per your discussion it is still unclear whether HO-1 effects are pro-degenerative or neuroprotective. Can you foresee situations where the immediate effect of HO-1 activation would be neuroprotective, but then after overwhelming intracelluar responses that the "bridge would be crossed" and the effect of HO-1 activation would promote neuronal cell death either by necrosis or apoptosis?
