Although the average workload, VO2, VE and HR data were similar between the water and glucose trials (indicating a similar physiologic strain), we did observe a lower rating of perceived exertion with glucose (P<0.01). As you may expect, the RER levels were significantly higher in the glucose trial but only during the 2nd hour of exercise. This was a result of the continuous drop in RER during the water trial but not in the glucose trial.
