Genes but no drugs

I'd be interested to know if pharmacologists and physiologists have found it useful to be given the gene for their receptor of interest often well in advance of the development of a high affinity selective ligand for that receptor.

For alpha1-adrenoceptors we are now forced to think in terms of 3 subtypes (because we have the 3 genes) even though there are few (if any) compounds that can 'cleanly' distinguish the 3 subtypes in FUNCTIONAL assays.

Craig.
