The mechanism you outline is indeed elegant. Could this type of system be protecting neurons in the brains of animals that survive long periods of time  in "metabolic arrest"? We study animals that can survive long periods of time with little or no ATP production and utilization in cells - for instance turtles can survive weeks with no oxygen, some frogs can survive months being frozen with no oxygen OR discernable brain function.  However when oxygen is restored ( and the animals are thawed after freezing) the brain leaps back to function!
