TECHNICAL ADMINISTRATION

Major Accomplishments while Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University:

Increased undergraduate enrollment in the Whiting School by 25% while improving all quality measures.

Increased externally funded research of the School by about 80% while faculty numbers increased roughly 5% only.

Improved the rankings in US News and World Report.  Rankings rose at the undergraduate level, and the rank of every department's graduate program improved or stayed the same.

Improved the process for faculty hiring to enhance quality, increase diversity, and aid planning.

Expanded the space occupied by the School to accommodate new research and student growth.  This expansion included construction of 4 new buildings, and acquisition and renovation of two older buildings (one of them historic).

Raised roughly $100M in support of programs and facilities.

Established the first cross-divisional initiatives such as the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute.

Established a new undergraduate major in environmental engineering.

Implemented enrollment control for students interested in the biomedical engineering major.

Developed a strategic plan and followed through with implementation.  The process of generating the strategic plan involved nearly all of the faculty and volunteer leadership of the School.

VITA

Dr. Ilene Busch-Vishniac works primarily in the areas of transduction and noise control.  Her speciality is the application of system dynamics and controls techniques to the special problems of sensors and actuators of multiple energy domains.  Her applications areas include electromechanical actuators for rapid positioning, acoustic transducers, and optical sensors.  These applications have allowed her to become a leading authority in automation and control of small scale mechanical processes, and in the modeling and improvement of acoustic transducers.  Her noise control work has centered on the effective design of highway noise barriers, and a new project focuses on characterizing the noise environment in hospitals.
