Associate Vice-President (Academic)

Peter Smith

The Associate Vice-President (Academic) reports to the Provost and is responsible for developing and coordinating policies and practices with respect to undergraduate education and enrollment management. The Associate Vice-President (Academic) plays a key role in a wide range of academic matters related to undergraduate studies, particularly those issues that cross Faculty boundaries and/or involve other educational institutions.

Other areas of responsibility include the Undergraduate Program Review process (UPR) and development of new programs and departments.

The Associate Vice-President (Academic) chairs: Undergraduate Council, the Enrollment Management Team (EMT), University Student Fees Committee, and the Associate Deans Group. He is a member of Senate and observer on the University Planning Committee (UPC) and Board of Governors.

Dr. Peter M. Smith came to Canada from Brazil in 1978 and received the B.Eng.Mgt. degree in Computer Engineering and Management from McMaster University in 1983. He continued at McMaster to complete his M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering, in 1985 and 1988, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster in 1987, where he is now Professor.

He is one of the leading experts worldwide on surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, a subject on which he has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and for which he was awarded the R. A. Ross Medal by the Engineering Institute of Canada. Dr. Smith is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Dr. Smith was Director of Engineering 1 at McMaster between 1996 and 1999, during a period of rapid expansion. He assumed the role of Associate Dean between 2002 and 2008. In 2007 he was appointed Acting Dean of Engineering for nine months. He brings to the office of Associate Vice-President (Academic) a broad perspective and interest on issues that affect undergraduate students.
