Director, Offord Centre for Child Studies

 

The Offord Centre for Child Studies is dedicated to improving the life quality and life opportunities of the one in five Canadian children and youth who suffer from serious social and emotional problems.

A joint venture of Hamilton Health Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, the Centre is focused on children’s mental health issues and helping build promising futures for every child. A permanent leader for the Offord Centre is currently being sought.

Founded in 1992 by child psychiatrist Dr. David “Dan” Offord, the Centre conducts research into a wide range of issues including child psychiatric epidemiology, child maltreatment, autism, community interventions, and school success. The Centre is also engaged in training of students who wish to obtain research training, as well as in dissemination of important information generated from the research studies.

Offord Centre faculty members represent a broad range of academic disciplines including psychiatry, health services research, family medicine, psychology, sociology, economics, nursing, pediatrics and rehabilitation science. The role of the Director is to facilitate the scientific excellence conducted by the members of the Centre while making sure that resources are available. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that the Centre carries out its vision and mission statement
  • Establishing the annual business plan and managing the operating budget
  • Ensuring that students obtain the highest level of training
  • Regular reporting to the University and hospital
  • Recruitment of skilled faculty and staff
  • Communication with the general public about the activities of the Centre
  • Fundraising

The Director reports jointly to the Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences and to the President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences. The term of the Directorship is five years, renewable subject to review.

The successful candidate will be a world-class researcher in child studies with a strong research and publication record. S/he will have proven management skills as evidenced through the development of successful research teams and/or programs and demonstrated a commitment to collaboration across disciplines. The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment in a relevant department at McMaster University.
