WCAG 2.0 AA Compliance
Section 1.4.1
Colour is not used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.
The basic idea to this section is that some people have difficulties comprehending colour. This shouldn't discourage your use of colour but make you aware of creating alternatives when using colour as an approach to achieving a certain purpose. For example, you can make certain text fields have a red background to indicate that they are required fields, but you should also add a text alternative in some manner that conveys the same information. An effective approach to providing alternatives to colour is to use Technique G111: Using color and pattern.
Example below
All fields with a red background are <strong>required</strong>:
<input style="background: red;" title="Name (required)" name="name" />References
