Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you keep your computer up-to-date. Use Windows Update to choose updates for your computer’s operating system, software, and hardware. New content is added to the site regularly, so you can always get the most recent updates and fixes to protect your computer and keep it running smoothly.

The Microsoft Update web site (which started with Windows 98) is a convenient and easy to use website that automatically installs needed software fixes and can also upgrade software components if you desire.

There are several options you can use to open the website.

Option 1
Use the Tools menu of Internet Explorer and select Windows Update (Figure 1).

Option 2
Use the Start Menu and select Windows Update from the list of programs (Figure 2).

Option 3
In addition, you can go to the website URL: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and you will be directed to the proper page by the website.

How does it all work for option 1, 2 and 3?

Follow a simple, three-step process to get the updates you need to keep your computer up-to-date.

** For Windows NT / 2000 / XP Users** see note below:

1. When you enter Windows Update, click Scan for updates.

2. As you browse through the available updates in each category, click Add to select the update of your choice and add it to the collection of updates you want to install. You can also read a full description of each item by clicking the Read more link.

3. When you have selected all the updates you want, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now.

Note Some updates may require that you restart your computer. Save your work and close any open programs before beginning the installation process.

Option 4
Windows XP users can configure Windows Update through System Properties. Click on the Start button. Select My Computer. Click on View System Information. In the System Properties window select Automatic Updates. Check Keep my computer up to date box and chose a download setting.

** Windows NT/2000/XP Users
Please ensure that you are logged onto your computer with a user account that has administrative
access rights. See Below for instructions:

Go to Start, settings control panel, users and passwords.

Click on your user name, click properties.

Click other, using the down arrow go through the list and click on administrators.

Click ok, apply and OK.

Reboot your computer and try the windows update again.

If the system will not let you add your user name to the administrators group, contact your Support
person for administrative access to the computer.
