Floppy Disks

Floppy drives are being phased out of the UTS labs as hardware is replaced. Only the KTH centre has machines equipped with floppy drives.

UTS recommends that portable USB Drives be used as an alternative to floppy disks. If you must use a floppy disk, keep the following in mind.

IMPORTANT When using the Student Computer Labs, working on a file directly from a floppy disk is strongly discouraged. Instead, copy the file from your floppy disk to the hard drive when you begin, and copy it back to your floppy disk when you are finished. Most modern software packages expect to work on files from a high-speed storage device.

Microsoft has reported data corruption and loss when using a floppy disk to work on Office documents. This problem becomes more troublesome when the documents are large. If you must load a file directly from a floppy disk, make sure you close the file before using another floppy disk.
