SPAM Information
Improved detection of spam and viruses was implemented August 31, 2004. Customers using Univmail electronic mail noticed an improved detection of spam and enjoy enhanced virus protection. Further upgrades to the mail system will allow those using other mail systems such as Mailman and Electronic Distribution Lists to also benefit from the new solution.
If you use Univmail, with an appropriately configured spam rule, you will see fewer spam messages in your inbox and more in your spam folder. Please check your spam folder more carefully because the improved spam detection methods are different than before. It is possible that a valid email may be detected as spam. Due to this possibility, it is recommended that you use a spam folder rather than immediately discarding messages classified as spam.
You will only benefit if you have a correctly configured spam rule. Please refer to the instructions on how to set up a spam rule at www.mcmaster.ca/uts/support/email/spam/filtering.html
When you check your spam folder please delete messages you do not need, as any messages left in your spam folder will impact your disk quota allotment. The initial deployment will benefit customers using mail services provided by University Technology Services. Later this fall, customers using other mail systems will also benefit from the enhanced service. With this in mind, changes in the electronic mail infrastructure will be ongoing over the next few months to improve security and customer service.
