Unlocking the System Preferences

1. Select the "Systems Preferences." option under the Apple Menu

2. Click on the "Network" icon under the Internet and Network subject heading

3. In the lower right hand corner of the screen you will see the lock icon pictured below:

If the message next to the lock says "Click the lock to prevent further changes" then continue on to next step.  If the message next to the lock says, "Click the lock to make changes" then press the lock icon and enter your administrator username and password.

Note:  An administrator username and password is set the first time you start your machine and run through the set up process. This username and password is necessary for any substantial system change or when system settings need to be unlocked in order to be changed.

Configuring TCP/IP
1. With the Network System Preferences still open, find and click on the TCP/IP tab and then locate the Show drop down menu and set it to "Internal Modem."

2. Set the Configure drop down menu to "Using PPP"

3. In the "Domain Name Servers" field enter:

  • 130.113.128.1
  • 130.113.64.1

4. In the "Search Domains" box enter "mcmaster.ca".

Configuring PPP

1. Click on the PPP tab on the Network System Preferences screen

2. Enter "McMaster University" in the Service Provider field

3. In the Telephone Number field enter "905, 521-0326."  (Note: If you have the "Call Waiting" feature on your telephone, disable it with the "*70" code before the area code ~ i.e., *70, 905, 521-0326"

4. Enter your proxy/modem username in the Account Name field

5. Enter your proxy/modem password in the Password field. 

6. Finally, put a check in the Save Password check box.

Adding Dial Up Menu to the Menu Bar
1. Click on the Modem tab.

2. Put a check in the Show Modem Status in Menu Bar Check Box.

3. Click the "Apply Now" button.

4. Under the File menu select "Quit."


Connecting and Disconnecting
1. Locate the Modem menu in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  In the menu bar you will find in menu that looks like a telephone.

2. To connect select "Connect" from under Modem menu.

3. When you are through with your dial up session go under the Modem menu again and select "Disconnect."
