MAC ID Services
You need to setup your MAC ID to access the following computing services at McMaster:
- McMaster University Gateway to Student Information (MUGSI)
- Student On-line Academic Registration (SOLAR)
- Use of Student Computer Labs
- Printing, Scanning and accessing the Internet from Student Computer Labs
- MacConnect – using ports & wireless connections through Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
- Avenue to Learn
- Software Downloads

Electronic Mail (E-Mail)
Every McMaster student is eligible for a McMaster e-mail account. The e-mail account is not given to you automatically; you must follow the below steps to enable this service:
- Complete your course registration and confirm Payment Agreement in SOLAR
- Wait 24 hours after completing Step 1, then log into MUGSI and click on “Enable your MAC ID Services” (please note; this is different from activating your MAC ID). Instructions on how to enable your services: http://www.mcmaster.ca/uts/macid/student/enable_services.html
- Once you complete the “Enable your MAC ID Services” step, please allow 24 hours for your e-mail account to be activated.

Undergrad Students:
- To get to your inbox go to https://studentmail.mcmaster.ca/ and log in with your MAC ID and password (make sure you’ve completed Enable Services Step)
- E-mail quota is 25 GB maximum.
- Your e-mail account will expire on Jamuary 31st of the following academic year.
Graduate Students:
- To get to your inbox go to https://univmail.cis.mcmaster.ca/ and log in with your MAC ID and password (make sure you’ve completed the ‘Enable your MAC ID Services’ Step)
- Your e-mail account will expire on January 31st of the following academic year.
- You’ll need to ‘Enable your MAC ID Services’ prior the expiration date.
You can easily access your McMaster e-mail through other mail clients like Outlook, Thunderbird and Macmail. For information on setting up one of those programs, click here.
Transition between Undergrad and Grad status. Affect on e-mail account.
When you become a Grad student the same academic year as you graduate from the Undergrad program your e-mail accounts will change. Please follow instructions below if you’d like to transfer your undergrad e-mail into grad e-mail account.
- Enable your MAC ID Services once you register for courses and process the Payment Agreement.
- If you would like to keep the email messages in your studentmail.mcmaster.ca account, you will have to forward the messages you wish to keep to your univmail account.
- You must repeat this process for each email in your studentmail.mcmaster.ca account you wish to keep.
Access to Avenue to Learn
Avenue to Learn
Avenue to Learn is a web application that lets you access information such as posted assignments, notes, quizzes or solutions to tests or exams, provided by your professors. For more information go to: http://www.ltrc.mcmaster.ca/webct/
Printing and Scanning Services
Printing services are available in all of the Student Computer Labs through the campus wide printing initiative Printsmart. A Prinstsmart printer has been placed in KTH B111, BSB 242, BSB 249 and JHE 234 for your convenience. More information regarding the Printsmart program can be found at their website http://printsmart.mcmaster.ca.
Scanning is available free of charge in all the Student Computer Labs at the designated scanner stations.
