SD3: Modernization and Simplification of Infrastructure

Update Released On: May 03, 2012

Virtualization

Effective virtualization is an essential part of a simplified IT environment. It allows to:

  • Promote sustainable (green) IT by lowering power and cooling costs
  • Reduce IT footprint by removing physical servers, networking devices, wires and freeing up the floor space
  • Controlled and reduced total cost of maintenance and total cost of ownership
  • Faster server provisioning due to tools that are available in the "virtual world".
  • No more hardware support or part replacements
  • Increased uptime due to virtualization features
  • Provision of redundancy

In support of "Modernization and Simplification of Infrastructure" strategic direction, UTS has adopted best practices managing their infrastructure in virtual environment:

  • Physical servers replaced by virtual servers. UTS now manages over 300 virtual servers
  • All new server installations including test are done on virtual environment

Consolidation

In addition to virtualization, a lot of work was undertaken by UTS to consolidate servers and storage.

Initial savings from consolidation result primarily from reducing the number of servers that must be acquired, deployed, and managed, which in turn reduces the cost of hardware, software, and personnel. In the longer term, savings can be achieved through improved:

  • standardization
  • utilization
  • security
  • management
  • business intelligence
  • facilities utilization

UTS has now centralized the pool of disk storage to a SAN across two data centres. Compared to managing hundreds of servers, each with their own disks, SANs improve system administration. By treating all the storage as a single resource, disk maintenance and routine backups are easier to schedule and control.

Automation

Enterprise Service Bus was adopted by UTS as a latest generation framework for integration and automation. It delivers the following benefits while addressing action items for "Modernization and Simplification of Infrastructure" strategic direction:

  • Automation through application integration
  • Scalability
  • Configuration vs. Custom coding
  • Unprecedented flexibility through its modularity
