Google Apps for Education for McMaster undergraduate students

McMaster launched a new service for all undergraduate students – Google Apps for Education in Spring 2012.

Migrations from the old email service to Google have been completed during Reading week 2012 with the migration success rate of 98.63%. All undergraduate students now have 25GB of email storage, Google Calendar, Google Docs and IMAP functionality - the ability to read emails on smartphones and via email clients.

Students voted to choose the Google e-mail system in a survey organized by the McMaster Students Union and we are happy to see the enthusiasm that students have while using this new and exciting service!

ITIL best practices

In order to achieve an enhanced level of standardization for the delivery and support of centrally managed technologies across the University, all UTS staff will be trained on ITIL foundation. ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a set of best practices for IT Service Management. ITIL training begins in May 2012 and will be concluded in the next few months. This training will allow UTS to re-focus on service management rather systems management.

MUGSI enhancements

Key improvements have been made to MUGSI for 2011-2012 academic year that will carried to 2012-2013 academic year:

  • Increased CPU capacity on the mainframe by about 30%
  • Changed how the registration transactions were processed to increase performance and reduce browser faults
  • Increased user count in Mugsi significantly to allow anyone in
  • Rescheduled batch jobs on the mainframe to free up CPU capacity
  • Increased SOLAR users allowed in by about 50%
