Chief Information Officer (CIO)

McMaster University

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) provides overall leadership to the University Technology Services (UTS) department consistent with the strategic direction of the University. The CIO is a member of the Senior Management Team and provides service and advice to all senior executives through the application of technology as the key enabler of institutional objectives and goals.

The CIO reports to the Vice-President Academic (Provost), Vice President Administration and Vice President Research. With responsibility for a team of over 100 Information Technology (IT) professionals, the CIO prepares and executes strategies and tactics to ensure that McMaster is a leader and innovator in the area of information technology. The UTS team collaborates with colleagues throughout the University to ensure a clear focus on value-added services to best serve students, faculty, staff and the research function in a context of teamwork and decentralized decision-making.

Prior to joining McMaster, John held progressively responsible positions in Information Systems and Technology in both the public and private sector. He began his career in Montreal in the 1980's with Canadian Pacific before relocating to Ontario where he joined the Canadian operations of Uniroyal Chemical. He spent 10 years at Wilfrid Laurier University where he provided the technological and strategic capabilities enabling that University to grow from 7,500 to nearly 15,000 students, and from a single to a multi-campus environment. During his career, John has been involved in numerous large-scale ERP, networking, and telecommunications projects in Canada, USA, Mexico and Brazil.

With a broad range of experience in Information Technology, John has demonstrated superior leadership in introducing and managing technological change, strategic and operational technology planning, and IT infrastructure design and implementation. He is skilled at aligning technology with organizational goals and his ability to deliver on commitments, manage customer relations, and facilitate team building is essential as he addresses the challenges faced by both academics and administration.

John has his Bachelor of Commerce (McGill), Master of Business Administration (Concordia), and Master of Engineering (Waterloo), and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.
