Deskphones

New

New phones can be rented on a per month basis by your department. Our on-line work order system is filled out by your department coordinator.

To request a new phone, departmental coordinators are asked to log the request thru PhoneWorks: http://telecom.mcmaster.ca/login.cfm

Repair

Any malfunctioning phones should be reported to the UTS Service Desk via uts@mcmaster.ca or ext. 24357. Please provide the following information when contacting us:

  • A description of the problem
  • The extension number of the phone with the problem
  • The location of the phone (building and room number)
  • Complete contact information (name, extension and location)

Voicemail

Telephone messages can be left in a voicemail box. Once a new phone is activated a choice may be made to have a voicemail setup. Voicemail only can also be setup that does not require a phone device.

Long Distance PIN

Employees at McMaster University may choose to use Long Distance PIN cards for their long distance calls.

To request a long distance PIN, departmental coordinators are asked to make the request through Phone Works: http://telecom.mcmaster.ca/login.cfm

New

One time service charge is $70 (pre-wired) or $248 (jack required). Monthly phone rental ranges from $28.30 to $50.30 a month depending on phone type chosen.

Repair

The cost of this service is included in your monthly phone fee.

Voicemail

Long Distance PIN

There is no cost getting the PIN card. Only the cost of making the actual long distance calls will apply. For current charges please visit http://telecom.mcmaster.ca/rates.cfm?i=A

7-10 business days is required in order to schedule this work.

Repair

Bell Technicians will address the repair within 24 business hours.

Voicemail

Next business day after the phone extension is activated.

Long Distance PIN

PIN card is provided 2 business days after a request is received.

Network Jacks

Network jacks are provided in office areas and labs as part of building infrastructure. Additional network jacks can be requested at departmental expense.

Cost varies depending on the building.

UTS employs a contractor to carry out the work. Estimated turnaround time will be provided once the request is processed.

Off Campus Access - VPN

Access to on campus resources from home or any other off campus location is possible through VPN. VPN must be installed and your MAC ID used in order to make a connection.

There is no cost for this service.

This service is available 24/7 with the exception of scheduled maintenance in the 'Technology Service Notice' email from off campus locations only.

BlackBerry

UTS is currently working with Rogers as the cellular carrier. Presently Blackberry  9000 and 9700 are offered.

iPhone

UTS is currently working with Rogers as the cellular carrier. Presently iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 is offered.

Student Residences

Local and toll free calls are free of charge. Long distance call plans are currently under review.

Free voicemail and free call display is provided with each phone.

This service is available 24/7 with the exception of scheduled maintenance in the 'Technology Service Notice' email.

Teleconference

A teleconference is a telephone meeting among two or more participants involving technology. This is one of the ways to hold meetings with off-site locations in a "green" way.

$25 setup charge plus $0.25/min of long distance used regardless of number of lines

Conference Unit Rental - $70.00 (includes delivery and demonstration)

2 hours advanced notice is required for Teleconference setup. You may use your desk phone to hold teleconference or rent a conference Unit. 24 hours notice is required to book the Unit.

Voicemail to Email

This service automatically forwards new voice messages to any email address you choose as a .WAV file attachment. You can listen to your voicemail messages from within any email client or mobile device.

Request this service:

  1. Must have a campus voicemail box and an existing email account to use the service
  2. Your Departmental Coordinator can login and submit a Telephone Work Order requesting the service on your behalf using our PhoneWorks system. To request Voicemail to Email now, please visit http://telecom.mcmaster.ca/workorder.cfm

Using Voicemail to Email service allows you to:

  • Play voicemail messages on your computer using MediaPlayer, QuickTime, etc
  • Play voice messages on your mobile device
  • Email messages containing the voice message attachment can be forwarded to other email recipients
  • Voice messages can be archived and sorted using folders in the user's email client or compute

Wireless Access on Campus

McMaster University has WiFi in most public areas ready. Mobile users may invoke an Internet browser, log in with their Mac ID in order to get connected to the Wireless network.
