Configuring Web Browsers to use McMaster Internet Proxy Server

Description of Configuration Steps

This list of settings for various versions of web browsers is intended as a brief guide to the configuration options needed to access the Internet through the McMaster web proxy server.

Supported browser versions include Mozilla Firefox 2 or higher and Internet Explorer 6 or higher.




Mozilla Firefox 2 & 3

Follow the chain of pull-down menus:

  • Click on Tools
  • Click on Options
  • Click on Advanced (select the Network Tab), then Settings
  • Click the Automatic Proxy configuration URL tick box
  • Enter http://proxy.mcmaster.ca/nautocfg.pac into the
    Configuration location (URL) box.
  • Then click OK, twice, to exit from the configuration setting menus.

Internet Explorer 6 & 7 - Cable Modem Connection *(see below)

Follow the chain of pull-down menus:

  • Tools 
  • Internet Options 
  • select the Conections tab 
  • click the LAN settings button (lower right) 
  • set the Use automatic configuration script tick box  (Warning: as of version 6, the Automatically detect settings box is set on by default, and does not automatically revert to unset when you select the automatic configuration script box - be sure to do this manually.)
  • enter http://proxy.mcmaster.ca/nautocfg.pac into the Address box (make sure the Use a proxy server tick box below is unset).

Internet Explorer 6 & 7 - Dial-Up Connection *(see below)

Follow the chain of pull-down menus: 
  • Tools 
  • Internet Options 
  • select the Conections tab 
  • select the relevant ISP in the Dial-Up settings box 
  • click on the Settings button beside it 
  • set the Use automatic configuration script tick box  (Warning: as of version 6, the Automatically detect settings box is set on by default, and does not automatically revert to unset when you select the automatic configuration script box - be sure to do this manually.)
  • enter http://proxy.mcmaster.ca/nautocfg.pac into the Address box 

* (For Sympatico, if you use an external home modem/switch such as a Linksys, D-Link, SMC or NetGear to handle your connection through Sympatico's High Speed Internet option, choose the "Cable Modem" connection option; otherwise, Sympatico Access Manager software requires the "Dial-Up" option.)


Netscape Communicator 4.5

Follow the chain of pull-down menus: 

  • Click on Edit 
  • Click on Preferences 
  • Click on Advanced (select the + sign), then Proxies 
  • Click the Automatic Proxy configuration tick box 
  • enter http://proxy.mcmaster.ca/nautocfg.pac into the 
    Configuration location (URL) box. 
  • Click OK to exit from the configuration setting menus.

Netscape 4.7, 6.2 and 7

Follow the chain of pull-down menus:

  • Edit 
  • Preferences 
  • select Advanced (click on + sign) 
  • select Proxies 
  • click the Automatic Proxy configuration tick box 
  • enter http://proxy.mcmaster.ca/nautocfg.pac into the 
    Configuration location (URL) box. 
  • Click OK to exit from the configuration setting menus.

Netscape 6.0

From the Netscape 6 Release notes: Automatic proxy configuration (APC files) are not supported. Your browser will appear to be unresponsive and unable to retrieve any URLs.
