IT Support for Microsoft Licencing

This page provides support for IT staff to assist with the activation of Microsoft products, such as KMS activation, MAK activation requests, and other support information for Office 365 ProPlus.

KMS Activation

The preferred method of volume licences at McMaster is by activation against a KMS server. For assistance with or troubleshooting for KMS activation, download our KMS activation guide.

MAK Activation

The MAK licenses will be available to staff or faculty who will not be able to activate the software through the KMS Server. The key will be provided when the following criteria have been met:

  1. -Client is working in the field for extended periods of time with little or no access to the internet;
  2. -Client is unable to use VPN to re-activate licenses.
  3. -Device will not be connected to the McMaster network at all. i.e. a computer running experiments that must be closed off to the entire network.

Key components of the MAK license agreement:

  1. -The client must remove the software if they are no longer employed;
  2. -The client may only use the activation key on approved devices and must receive approval for any additional devices;
  3. -The client may not share the activation key with anyone;
  4. -The software is not to be used for home-use;

If KMS activation will not work, please submit a ticket to service desk ticket to request a MAK activation key.

Please print the Microsoft Licence Agreement Form, Sign it, and include the scanned copy of the signed document in the service desk ticket

After sign in, select Desktop Computing then MAK Activation. MAK Request

General Microsoft Support

With McMaster's campus wide Microsoft agreement, there are a number of changes to Microsoft's products and services that can affect various systems and services. We recommend that IT support staff familiarize themselves with the following documentation that may affect program installations.

Microsoft recommends 32-bit versions of Office 365 ProPlus/Office Professional Plus as it is widely considered the most stable and compatible.

Click-to-install vs .MSI Installers

Office 365 ProPlus is a click-to-install application and does not always work with .msi installer types, which are typically used for volume licences.
