Information Sharing using MAILMAN
One of the many ways in which people may choose to share information electronically
on campus is via lists that are distributed by MAILMAN.
MAILMAN is a computer mailing list manager application available
to the McMaster community via McMail and access is provided through electronic
mail and the web interface. The service is available to faculty, staff
and MSU Clubs. Lists owned by students may be approved with the sponsorship
of a permanent McMaster employee. List resources are limited and some
restrictions may apply. Users may add themselves to mailing lists, in
order to communicate via electronic mail or web interface to discuss a
variety of issues, share information, ask questions and receive answers.
MAILMAN provides for moderated and unmoderated lists. The lists will
be "owned" by the person who initiated the request for the list.
| NOTE: List owners are solely responsible for the
administration of their list and for overseeing the functioning of the list.
List owners are also responsible for announcing the list and for problems
encountered by subscribers (or potential subscribers) to their list.

Moderated list owners approve subscriptions to their list and approve all messages
before posting to their list. The system also maintains hierarchical archives
of files that users may get. Archives and lists may be private, which means
that a password is required for archive access, and that the owner of a private
list decides who may subscribe and who may not.
When referring to a local list, your request will be immediately processed;
when referring to a remote list (a list served by another ListProcessor which
this system knows about), your request will be appropriately forwarded.
