Man-made greenhouse gas emissions are a major contributing factor to global warming. The Environmental impact of IT and computing can be lessened by adapting sustainable computing, reducing carbon footprint across McMaster University, making recycling a part of our life and following Green Practices.

UTS is continuously searching for ways to reduce its environmental footprint by undertaking and supporting Green Computing Initiatives and adopting evolving Green Practices. UTS is also raising awareness of the need for Green Computing by participating in events like Earth Day organized by the Office of Sustainability.

There are several Green Practices that UTS is adhering to:

Energy Management

Energy efficiency activities are a starting point for Green IT. UTS is using devices that use less energy, run cooler, last longer, and provide more processing power per device. UTS is moving to working with vendors to acquire devices that allow the reduction of the energy consumption, i.e. Energy Star Compliant, manage hazardous materials and minimize resource usage and waste.

Recycle/Disposal Programs

UTS strives to reduce the impact of electronic waste (e-waste) on the waste stream. UTS in collaboration with Facility Services is disposing of technological equipment according to current best practices. We assist McMaster departments in identifying IT equipment that is eligible for disposal and also possible reuse through a feasible upgrade.

Duplex Printing

As part of the PrintSmart implementation led by Media Production Services, UTS is implementing default settings on McMaster computers to enable backprinting which reduces the conventional amount of paper usage.

Purchasing and Procurement

UTS is working with Purchasing to acquire Information Technology equipment with the goal of reducing the environmental impact.

UTS is actively searching for new ways to promote Green Computing. We have undertaken, and plan to implement various Green Initiatives.
