IMAP Setup

You can now read your email, import your calendar, google drive and your contacts from your studentmail account onto your smartphone!! IMAP functionality, which allows the user to read emails on smartphones, tablets and via email clients, like Outlook and Macmail, is now available with your McMaster Student Email powered by Google.

Before You Begin

  1. Log into the account, open the settings and click on Forwarding and IMAP/POP. Click on the link to enable IMAP functionality and then save.
  2. You will need to allow less secure apps in the Google account (this is a new fature recently added by Google, if this feature is not turned on you will not be able to add the account to any service not owned and operated by Google).

    • To turn this on begin by selecting the photo icon at the top right of the screen (usually your first initial with a colorful background).
    • In the dropdown menu select the blue button that says "My Account".
    • Under the "Sign-in & security" section click on the link "Connect apps & sites".
    • From here scroll to the bottom ensure that "Allow less secure apps:" is set to ON.
  3. If you have this account linked to another gmail account, disable multiple account log in. Instructions on doing this are at the Google support web site.

Worth Noting

  • If you have a Blackberry Z10 and wish to setup your email on your phone, please go to BlackBerry Z10.html
  • When trying to set up on Iphone, do not select Gmail as the mail provider, select Other
  • Android phones may require that the encryption method be set SSL-accept all certificates instead of just SSL.
  • Some blackberry models will automatically detect the settings and they will not need to be input.
  • After disabling multiple account log in on Google, it may be necessary to log into the McMaster account on the web in order to be able to set up IMAP. (Please go to https://studentmail.mcmaster.ca and log in, then log out and try the IMAP setup again.)
  • Apple devices automatically select port 587 instead of 465. It is necessary to change this manually.
  • It should be made clear that the sign in for the account is user name(macid) only, do not include @mcmaster.ca. It should also be noted that this is case sensitive.
