Encrypted WPA Wireless - Windows XP SP3

These instructions apply to Windows XP SP3 only. Use these instructions to connect your Windows XP computer to the McMaster MacSecure wireless network. MacSecure uses Wireless Protected Access (or WPA2 for short) and provides encryption between your computer and the Wireless Access Point that you connect to.

  • Requirements:
    • Windows XP with wireless adpater
    • Service Pack 3 installed
    • Latest System Updates (Control Panel - Windows Updates) * Important - WPA is a newer protocol and ensuring your system is up to date is essential for it to work properly
  • From the Start menu, select Control Panel. Open Network Connections (In category view, click Network and Internet Connections first). Right click the Wireless Connections icon in Network Connections, and select Properties.

  • Your Wireless Network Connections dialog box should pop up. Click the Add button.

  • Under EAP type: make sure Protected EAP (PEAP) is selected. Remove the Check beside Authenticate as computer when computer information is available. Click the Properties button.

  • At the Protected EAP Properties place a check beside the boxes Validate server certificate, and Connect to these servers. Enter wireless.mcmaster.ca as the certificate name exactly as shown. Under Trusted Root Certification Authority, pick the certificate Thawte Premium Server CA. Finally, click the Configure button.

  • How do I remove cached user credentials that are used for PEAP authentication in Windows XP?

When you successfully log on to a wireless network that uses Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP) authentication, your credentials are automatically stored in the computer for reuse. For example, when you shut down and then restart your computer, you are automatically logged on to the wireless network. There is no option that you can configure in Windows XP to prevent the operating system from storing your credentials (Windows Vista and Win7 do not have this limitation). By design, the cached credentials are not deleted and do not time out unless the user does not authenticate or the wireless network is removed from the preferred list. However, you can delete the registry key where your user credentials are stored. When you do this, you are prompted to enter your credentials the next time that you log on to the network.
