Encrypted WPA Wireless - Windows 7 & Vista SP2
These instructions apply to Windows Vista and Windows 7 only. Use these instructions to connect your Windows 7 or Vista SP2 computer
to the McMaster MacSecure wireless network. MacSecure uses Wireless Protected Access (or WPA2 for short) and provides encryption between
your computer and the Wireless Access Point that you connect to.
- Requirements:
- Windows 7 Computer with wireless adpater
- Windows Vista computer with Service Pack 2 installed, wireless adapter
- Latest System Updates (Control Panel - Windows Updates) * Important - WPA is a newer protocol and ensuring your system is up to date is essential for it to work properly
- From Control, double click the Network and Sharing Center. Under Tasks, click the option Set up a connection or network.
- Under Choose a connection option click the selection Manually connect to a wireless network, then click Next.
- At the Enter information for the wireless networl you want to add match the options as shown:
- Network Name: MacSecure Note the capitalization - it's important
- Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
- Encryption Type: AES
- Security Key/Passphrase: Blank
- Once you receive Successfully added MacSecure, click the option Change connection settings.
- At the MacSecure Wireless Network Properties screen, click settings. If you do not want this computer to remember your MAC ID and password, click off the Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network. Doing this means you have to type your MAC ID and password each time you connect.
- At the Protected EAP Properties place a check beside the boxes Validate server certificate, and Connect to these servers. Enter wireless.mcmaster.ca as the certificate name exactly as shown. Under Trusted Root Certification Authority, pick the certificate Thawte Premium Server CA. Finally, click the Configure button.
- Under EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties, uncheck the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK, then click OK a second time.
- You will be prompted to enter your MAC ID and password. Do so at the Enter Credentials screen. You should connect to MacSecure momentarily.
