MacConnect (Wireless@McMaster)

UTS supports wireless network access using Wi-Fi technology ( currently using IEEE 802.11g equipment) in many areas across campus such as the Student Centre, libraries, lobby areas where people gather, and some classrooms. Since it uses shared radio spectrum, it primarily provides light-duty access for the convenience of mobile clients, as an adjunct to the wired network.

In addition, a number of wired data jacks in public areas such as library desks and classrooms use the same MacConnect mechanism to provide network access. These are jacks into which a user can plug a patch cable to connect the Ethernet port of his/her machine to the network (specific coverage areas are listed in links in the index at left).

The MacConnect mechanism requires authentication as a member of the McMaster community (or sponsored guest) using your MAC ID account. Since wireless uses a shared medium, it is strongly recommended that users ensure that encryption is in place before accessing any personal or sensitive information (see Security section). Many applications are designed to use SSL-secured web pages (https protocol) to ensure that a password or other sensitive data is not passed in clear-text where it may be susceptible to snooping.
