 MacConnect is Changing!

Last Updated: May 17, 2010

What is Changing?

UTS is making MacConnect more accessible and easier to use! Beginning May 12th, 2010, the Cisco Clean Access Agent is no longer required for access to MacConnect. Previously the Agent was required for Windows users to access the Internet through MacConnect. Now, Windows users can proceed directly to their web browser, where you will be prompted to enter your MAC ID credentials. Once logged in, you have immediate access to the Internet - no need to invoke the Agent. In fact, you can uninstall the Agent completely.

Further changes are coming this summer to increase the capacity of the wireless system and enhance security at which point Clean Access will be removed, the agent will no longer work and authentication for MacConnect will be invoked from the initial web page (same as now, once you uninstall the agent, with only a slightly different appearance).

What about Non-Windows computers?

The Cisco Agent was only needed for Windows computers. All other MacConnect users should connect using the same method they use now. No change in procedure is required.

Steps to uninstall the Cisco Agent:

Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. In the Currently installed programs box, click the Cisco NAC Agent, and then click Remove.
  3. If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.

Windows Vista/Win7:

  1. Click the Start button then click Control Panel
  2. Click Programs and Features. This will list all of the installed programs.
  3. Right click on the Cisco NAC Agent and select Uninstall. Select Yes if it prompts you to confirm that you want uninstall.

How do I connect to MacConnect without the Agent?

  • Establish a wireless connection as you would previously.
  • Opening your web browser should direct you to the login web page as shown below. If it doesn't, try going to another web page that isn't hosted at McMaster (for example www.yahoo.com).

  • Enter your MACID credentials to connect.
  • A Login information screen will appear along with a Logout button. Maintain this page to logout from MacConnect. If you accidentally close this window, your account will be automatically logged out 10 minutes after your turn off your computer.
