'Core' (Level I) services are foundation elements upon which other
services are built. These are analogous to tools like hammers, saws and
rulers that one can use to build 'something useful' (people do not expect
to construct the hammer before carrying out a carpentry project).
Core components comprise network, data model and critical processing
functions.
1. Network infrastructure includes:
- campus
backbone network linking buildings and major affinity groups with
redundant fibre cables linked by multiport routers
- network wiring
within buildings
- domain name service, central name and ip address
registration
- central servers for post-office functions & email routing
- connections off-campus to ONet and the Internet
- support,
error-correction and reliability planning
2. Data model
components includes:
- data integrity and security planning &
procedures
- data model and its implementation on distributed servers
- integration of departmentally 'owned' data with central data
- central data server operation and data backup
- standards for
access, security and desktop query and update
3. Critical
business application examples might include: - payroll, cheque
processing, T4 generation
- that transaction processing which has
critical demand for real-time concurrency of data
