PURPOSE:

Ensure the CIS undergraduate computer labs are reliable and use current technology in the support of instructional computing and that they are staffed appropriately to assist customers with problem resolution.

CUSTOMERS:

Potentially all students attending the University. Faculty use computer technology for instruction.

HOW WELL IS IT DONE? HOW DO I MEASURE?

(a) Achievement of Objectives
-The objectives of the labs are set out by the Academic Computing Advisory Committee (ACAC) in collaboration with Computing & Information Services taking into account funding available.
-No. of classes using the labs in First term 2001/02 = 118 courses (69 in BSB), (25 in JHE), (24 in KTH), for a total 148 hours/week of instruction

(b) Service level
-Service level definitions are reviewed on a yearly basis to keep current.
-Measured by system availability. Seat counts are also taken periodically as well as a customer survey . There are 329 machines in the labs and 361 staffed hours.

(c) Costs
-The overall cost of keeping current and maintaining the labs is approximately $500,000 per year.

LINKAGES & OPPORTUNITIES:

EXTERNAL
-External includes periodic bookings for the Centre for Continuing Education and some outside seminars. Marketing of the labs outside the University has been limited because of potential conflicts with the educational discounts we receive for hardware and software.
- An evaluation tool used by Maclean's annual review of University

INTERNAL
- Student Liaison use the labs as part of tours in April, August, November and February to attract students
- Human Resources, CIS
- Students from all Faculties
- CIS training done for the MSU
- Teaching faculty, LTC and faculty representatives.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
- Scanning exams and course evaluations, and providing reports for the Registrar
- Adding money to the laser/enhanced modem pool accounts
