Over the course of the year, the Board of Directors, led by president Bill McLean undertook a review of the structure and operations of the Board itself. It was recognized that in spite of the immense growth of the institution, and the alumni program, the McMaster Alumni Association Board had not undergone an assessment of its function to adapt to these changes in quite some time. The Executive leadership of the MAA Board embraced a process of review and consideration. The process included a detailed review of the practices and change management being undertaken by other leading institutions in the area of Board structure and representation (including detailed discussions with McGill University and Duke University).
On October 1, 2011 a retreat was held for the MAA Board of Directors and former MAA presidents to further discuss the MAA Board and ways to build upon its existing success. A sub-committee on Board Structure and Representation was formed to provide leadership to the review and make recommendations to the Board.
In January, the sub-committee brought forward recommendations driven by their research, and consultations with a number of stakeholders. These recommendations were reviewed in detail and accepted at the February, 2012 Board meeting. Highlights of the changes include: increasing terms of the Executive Officers from one year to two years; allowing for the Past President to hold a position on the Board of Governors; elimination of the 2nd Vice President position; creation of Member at Large positions; recruiting participation of geographically distant alumni; and adjusting the meeting schedule and agendas to promote engagement of our volunteers in strategic issues and discussion and fewer operational updates.
With the Board's approval to move forward with these changes, the constitutional changes were circulated to the alumni population via Maroon Mail and the website and were put to vote on June 2 at the MAA's Annual General Meeting. The revised constitution was approved and can be viewed here.

125 anniversary year
On April 23, 2012, McMaster University celebrated its 125th anniversary since its founding which was the result of a single gift by Senator William McMaster. Alumni have been invited to join in the celebration and renew their pride in their alma mater by participating in the People of Impact program where alumni are asked to submit their nominations for the person they believe has made the greatest impact on McMaster and the world. Weekly trivia contests test alumni's knowledge of McMaster history and videos and slideshows share images and moments of McMaster's impressive history. Celebrations will continue throughout 2012 and we trust that alumni will take the opportunity to learn about what's in McMaster's past, but also how they continue to be part of its future.
Mac10
Over a third of McMaster's 153385 alumni have graduated since the year 2000 and with ever increasing graduating class sizes, we will continue to see the average age of our alumni drop. Recognizing the many and varied interests and needs of this demographic, we conducted a survey and were thrilled to receive an outstanding response. The feedback from this survey lead to the creation of the MAC10 alumni program – with Social, Intellectual and Professional focused events and programs, held in Hamilton, Toronto and, in some cases, online. Launched in February, ten MAC10 events have already taken place, with 331 participants – 50% of whom had never before attended an alumni event! The program is off to a great start and we welcome continued input and suggestions from recent graduates to keep the program fresh and relevant.
Milk & Cookies
Milk & Cookies attracted one of the highest participation rates! Who knew the offer of milk & cookies along with a debate, networking and social time would draw hundreds of alumni, students and professors to the weekend long Arts & Science Program 30th Reunion held on Homecoming Weekend. The enthusiastic participation of graduates from this innovative program was one of the most engaged groups for 2011/2012!
Return of the MAC Luncheon
For many years, the “Mac Luncheon” was a cornerstone of the local Hamilton alumni program, attracting the downtown business audience with six engaging speakers per year. In recent years, attendance at the events signalled a change was needed and we put the program on hold while we re-assessed its place in our program. Missing that important connection to alumni working and living in downtown Hamilton, we re-launched the luncheon in 2012 with Chancellor Red Wilson, whose inspiring talk highlighted the role of the University within the City of Hamilton and the many ways they support each other. Going forward, we will strive to bring highly engaging speakers to deliver talks on topics of local interest, two to four times per year.
Number of Events Held:

One of the great pleasures we enjoy as an Association is the opportunity to learn about and recognize the accomplishments and achievements of our alumni. Created to celebrate the interesting and accomplished lives of McMaster graduates, the Alumni Gallery celebrates its 30th anniversary with the 2012 edition. It has enriched the life of the Association, and of the University, with the truly inspiring stories of remarkable McMaster graduates. We commend the dedicated volunteers of the Alumni Gallery Sub-Committee for their excellent work and commitment to honouring our exceptional graduates.
Seven graduates join the more than 350 Alumni Gallery members along with other MAA Award winners at the May ceremony held in
Convocation Hall.
