Academic Life

A sustainable academic life for students includes everything from the design of campus buildings and lecture halls, offering courses that include topics related to sustainability and even students practicing environmentally friendly study habits.

To learn more about the sustainable aspects of each campus building, find the link on the left navigation titled "Sustainable Buildings"; from there you can research each building individually.

If you are interested in learning more about sustainability in the classroom, find the "Education" link on the
left navigation menu, and select Take a Course. This page provides a list of each course offered at McMaster which contains a component related to sustainability. Take a look at the new SUSTAIN 2A03: The Sustainable Future Project course!

Do you study sustainably? Check out the tips below:

    • Try purchasing your courseware second hand. Look for a used copy from the bookstore or from many of the used book swap websites.
    • When needing new notebooks, check out MAC Green’s "Used but not Bruised Notebooks."
    • Do you have a power bar at your desk? Make sure you shut down the entire bar when not in use. Having hardware plugged in, even when turned off, still uses energy. This is known as "phantom energy."
    • If you have a computer with an Energy Star rating, you still must activate the power management feature to fully utilize the energy savings.
    • Try changing your light bulbs to CFL or LED bulbs to save up to as much as 80-90% of the energy you use to light your room. Learn More.
    • Print double sided when possible and try lowering the print quality on draft documents to reduce the amount of paper and ink used when printing.
    • Re-use paper that has only been used on one side. Scratch a line through the notes on the used side to avoid confusion.
