Project: Graduate/Undergraduate Collaboration for Experiential Learning (GUCEL) Pilot ProgramMelissa Gallina

Melissa is the Coordinator of the GUCEL Pilot Program, a new initiative which will allow graduate and undergraduate students to collaborate with one another on related experiential learning projects to achieve results as a team. This project is supported by the School of Graduate Studies through the SPICES program.

Objectives:

1. Enhance the graduate student experience by contributing to intellectual community and engaged scholarship.
2. Encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration between graduate students, undergraduate students, McMaster University and the wider community.
3. Conduct two pilot projects under the supervision of the Office of Sustainability, while developing the framework for the larger GUCEL Program.

 

Jeff Chan

Project: Engage with WasteJeff Chan

Jeff is an undergraduate student and member of the GUCEL Pilot Project, “Engage with Waste”. Jeff is working to engage students, faculty and staff members in select buildings on the McMaster campus through promotion, communication infrastructure improvements and education. This project aims to act as a pilot program by which to educate future waste management practices and programs that have the opportunity to be extended campus-wide.

Objectives:
1. Provide collaborative opportunities for students, faculty members and staff to engage in waste diversion.
2. Host engagement events.
3. Facilitate infrastructure improvements to support waste diversion.

 

 

 

Janelle Trant

Project: Engage with WasteJanelle Trant

Janelle is a graduate student and member of the GUCEL Pilot Project, “Engage with Waste”. Within her project, Janelle is working to increase campus-wide waste diversion through stakeholder engagement. This project is supported by McMaster’s Facility Services as well as McMaster’s external waste service providers.

Objectives:
1. Evaluate current waste volume reports to identify areas for improvement.
2. Engage in a detailed study of the current state of building infrastructure as well as the practices and processes at various stages in the waste disposal at system.
3. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to make recommendations and implement new programs that will have a positive impact on waste diversion at McMaster.
4. Work with stakeholders to improve data recording and reporting to facilitate easy and effective management of waste data at both the building and campus level.
