Transportation

GET IN ON THE ACT!

Created in 2002, the ACT Office (All-modes Commuting & Transportation) existed to inspire McMaster faculty, staff and students to bike, hike, take transit and share the ride to campus.

In November 2008, the ACT Office transformed into the Office of Sustainability where initiatives relating to sustainable transportation will continue to thrive.

Hamilton Cycling Updates

1) During the 2012 - 2013 winter season a pilot project will continue to test enhanced maintenance activities for a specific section of the "on-road painted" bike lanes to measure the benefit and cost of extending availability of bike lanes further into the winter season. The enhanced activities include additional inspection, ploughing, anti-icing, and street sweeping when warranted and feasible (excluding snow removal for the specific benefit of the affected bike lanes). This pilot project includes the bike lanes on Sterling Street, Longwood Road, Dundurn Street, and Sanders Boulevard. The pilot will be assessed and recommendations developed for future consideration. The pilot was initiated last winter, but the mild conditions have us continuing the pilot this winter.

To provide feedback on this project please access the web survey. You can complete the survey multiple times as conditions vary and please share it with other people.

2) The province is looking for feedback on the recently released Provincial Cycling Strategy. Provide your feedback here.

3) Share The Road is hosting its first youth cycling summit. Visit youthcycleon.com to learn more.

4) Have images of cycling in Hamilton? Please consider sending them to daryl.bender@hamilton.ca

What would you do with 32 extra minutes each day?

Residents of the greater Toronto and Hamilton area are asked to visit your32.com/mcmaster to share what they would do with 32 extra minutes each day. That number refers to the time the average commuter will save if the regional transportation plan, The Big Move, is funded and realized over the next 25 years.

Introducing the Flex Pass

To encourage staff, faculty and students to take a sustainable mode of transportation, Security & Parking Services has introduced the Flex Pass- a ten visit reloadable parking pass. Flex Passes expire 12 months from the date of purchase, and can be used for many lots on campus. For the fair-weather cyclist or the potential walker who occasionally has off campus meetings, or for anyone who drives to campus nine times or less each month, the Flex Pass provides a more sustainable option for on-campus parking.

Where to Park:
All gated lots with the exception of Lot A, Lot B & Lot D.

Cost:
$90 for 10 entry/exits

How to Purchase:
Attend the Parking Office, located in the E.T. Clark Centre, Room 102. Make payment by cash, credit, debit, or cheque.

McMaster Wins the 2012 Clean Air Commute

McMaster won the 2012 Clean Air Commute challenge with 12% participation rate. Andrew Pettit, Sports League & Camps Coordinator, won this year's Clean Air Commute Spirit Award for his enthusiasm in promoting clean air commuting and for engaging members of the Athletics & Recreation team to take part as well by choosing sustainable modes of travel.

McMaster Transportation Survey

A Campus Transportation Survey was sent to all McMaster employees and students in 2010 which posed questions about individual travel behaviour, such as the respondent’s mode of transportation and his/her attitudes towards them, as well as questions relating to the respondent’s demographics. Initial findings from this study were communicated to the campus community in May 2011 and showed the following results:

  • 45% of respondents agree or strongly agree that they limit their automobile travel to improve the environment
  • 37% of students and 18% of employees choose to walk or cycle.
  • 39% of students and 13% of employees ride the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR)
  • 24% of students and 65% of employees choose to drive a personal automobile.
