Kate Whalen; Senior Manager, University Sustainability
In her role as Senior Manager, University Sustainability, Kate collaborates and facilitates the strategic direction, communication, implementation, and management of various aspects of University sustainability, including providing the overall direction for the Sustainability Internship Program. Kate is also the Director of the Sustainable Future Program, where she directs the development and operation of the Program through building and fostering relationships and forming collaborations with staff, students, faculty and members of the broader Hamilton community.
In her role, Kate encourages staff, faculty and students and community members to join in to help create a sustainable culture at McMaster and within the broader community.
Kate has an Honors B.A. and M.A. from McMaster University and is currently a PhD candidate in McMaster’s School of Geography and Earth Sciences.
Katie Ferguson; Manager, University Sustainability
In her role as Manager, University Sustainability, Katie develops and facilitates the Sustainability Internship Program, for which undergraduate and graduate students complete sustainability initiatives in an area of focus of their interest. Areas of focus entail Education, Energy, Green Space, Health & Wellbeing, Transportation, Waste and Water.
The program offers the opportunity for students who have a passion for sustainability to apply their education of sustainability theory to practical application. Katie collaborates with McMaster Faculties, administrative departments, the McMaster Students Union (MSU) and the broader Hamilton community to provide opportunities for students who are interested in completing sustainability initiatives and to guide their experiential learning. Students interested in pursing an internship through the Office of Sustainability may contact Katie for more information. Course credit is awarded, from the Faculty by which the student is enrolled, to those who successfully complete an internship. With her main focus being the facilitation of Faculty-specific internships, Katie also provides support to the interdisciplinary course Sustainability 2A03 – The Sustainable Future Project. More information pertaining to the course can be found here.
Katie has an Honours B.Sc. (Kinesiology) from McMaster University.
Zeinab Rahal; Coordinator, University Sustainability
In her role, Zeinab works directly with students, faculty, staff and members of the community to address questions and comments as they relate to University Sustainability. Zeinab coordinates all marketing, promotion and communication for the Office of Sustainability, which includes developing content and ensuring the Office of Sustainability website is fully functional, current and interactive. Zeinab works collaboratively with internal stakeholders and partnering organizations to develop and distribute information about campus sustainability. In addition, all educational campaigns and special events hosted by the Office of Sustainability are facilitated by Zeinab who is highly passionate about providing opportunity for community engagement and developing of a culture of sustainability through promotion, communication and education.
Alongside her role at the Office of Sustainability, Zeinab is an electrical engineering student at McMaster.
Mallory Drumm; Manager, The Sustainable Future Project (SFP)

In her role, Mallory works collaboratively with members of the community, including students, faculty, staff at McMaster as well as individuals, groups and organizations, both internal and external to the University, to manage, develop and effectively deliver Sustain 2A03 - The Sustainable Future Project. Sustain 2A03 is a second level, multi-disciplinary course focused on sustainability and experiential education, with the goal of creating more knowledgeable and effective change agents. Mallory manages all communication for the course as well as works directly with community project champions and mentors as well as currently enrolled and future students to Sustain 2A03.
Mallory has a Combined Honours B.A. from McMaster in Communications and English.
