McMaster Wins the 2011 Clean Air Commute Challenge!

Congratulations to all who took part in the Clean Air Commute, as you helped contribute to McMaster winning the challenge for its size category.

McMaster won with more than 13.4% participation, which is more than 9% higher than any other organization in the same category!

Event Overview

During the week of June 13-17, McMaster will be taking part in Pollution Probe’s Clean Air Commute.
During the challenge employees are encouraged to commute to work in a cleaner way by biking, walking, telecommuting, taking public transit, driving a hybrid, carpooling or even just giving the car a tune-up!

McMaster University won the 2011 Clean Air Commute by having the highest rate of participation in its size category.

 

Schedule of Events

Friday June 10

  • Free Pancake Breakfast (8am-10:30am, MUSC Atrium)
    • Come out and show your support for the Clean Air Commute and sustainable forms of transportation; don’t forget your reusable mug 


Monday June 13 – Friday June 17

  • Clean Air Commute Tent (11am-2pm, MUSC/Mills Plaza)
    • Week long: trip planning, transit and transportation information provided by the Office of Sustainability and FREE bike repairs courtesy of MACycle.
      • For personalized trip planning, please send an email to sustainability@mcmaster.ca with your preferred mode of transportation, origin and destination. You will receive a follow-up phone call or email the following day

Monday June 13

  • Clean Air Fair (11:30am-2:30pm, MUSC/Mills Plaza)
    • A great chance to win prizes and learn about sustainable transportation initiatives from SmartCommute, Hamilton CarShare, Open Streets Hamilton, MACycle, and more.


Tuesday June 14

Wednesday June 15

  • Mass Walk lead by Roger Couldrey, Vice President (Administration)
    • (12:00 pm - 12:45 pm, Meet at Gilmour Hall front steps)
    • Join your colleagues for a leisurely and informational stroll around the campus and show your support for clean air commuting.
    • Prizes will be given out to all participants who attend the walk and one grand prize will be raffled off to one of the event participants.
    • Mass Walk Route.
    • In the event of inclement weather, the walk will take place at the indoor track of the David Braley Athletic Centre.
  • Segway 101 (1pm-2pm, MUSC/Mills Plaza)
    • Come out and learn how to glide on a segway!


Thursday June 16

  • Totally Transit Thursday (All day)
    • Pick up a Smart Commute wristband at locations around the city and ride the HSR for FREE all day Thursday
    • Wristband Pick-up (starting June 10th)
      • 77 James St. N. Suite 320
      • Compass Information Desk on the main level of the McMaster University Student Centre
      • Security Desk in the front lobby of McMaster’s Downtown Centre


Friday June 17

    • Bike to Work (or School) Day
      • For those who did not log their progress online at Cleanaircommute.ca, don’t forget to drop off your paper diary card to Gilmour Hall B107
      • Prizes will only be awarded to those who have logged a commute

      Monday June 13

      • Event Breakfast Kick-off (8:00am-10:00pm, RJC Atrium on first floor)
        • Join us for a light breakfast and learn more about the Clean Air Commute challenge
        • A great chance to win prizes and learn about sustainable transportation initiatives from SmartCommute Halton.


      Tuesday June 14

      • Lunch & Learn event on CarpoolZone (12:30-1:00pm & 1:00-1:30pm, RJC Great Hall on the first floor)
        • Learn how to find a carpool partner and set up a formal or informal carpool
        • A pizza, pop, and juice will be provide, along with the opportunity to win some great prizes, to those who register online before 9:00am on June 14th

      Wednesday June 15

      • Mass Walk (12:15 pm - 12:45 pm, Meet at the RCJ Atrium)
        • Join your colleagues for a leisurely and informational walk around the RJC campus to learn more about what's to come for the RJC.
          • The walk will include a tour of the 4th floor of the RJC as well as the RJC parking lot (weather permitting)
          • Prizes will be given out to all participants who attend the walk


      Monday June 20

        • Closing Cool-down (2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., RJC Atrium on first floor)
          • Join us for a slice of strawberry shortcake, along with coffee, tea, and juice, to celebrate the 2011 Clean Air Commute.
          • Prizes, including the mountain bike, will be drawn at 3:00 p.m. sharp by Smart Commute Halton

        Logging a sustainable commute enters you into a GTHA-wide draw for a chance to win one of a number of fantastic grand prizes:

        • A 7-day adventure trip to Machu Picchu, Peru from Intrepid Travel
        • One of 7 Raleigh mountain bikes
        • A Bobby Hull autographed hockey stick

         

        You will also be entered into a McMaster-specific for a chance to win one of a number of additional prizes:
