Hope for better hearing? Engineering approaches to studying and treating
hearing loss and tinnitus.

More than 10% of the population suffers from some form of hearing loss, and many of these individuals are afflicted by tinnitus, a phantom ringing or hissing sound.

At present, there exist no medical cures for most types of hearing loss and tinnitus. While many people are helped greatly by hearing aids, others have received little benefit from hearing aids (especially in noisy environments) and have given up wearing them.

This presentation will look at how the ear and brain process sounds and what causes different forms of hearing loss and tinnitus. Dr. Bruce will describe improvements that are being made in hearing aids and other treatment strategies and discuss what potential cures are being investigated.

The Hamilton Spectator Auditorium is located in the Hamilton Spectator at 44 Frid Street, south of Main Street West, west of Dundurn St.

HEADER TEXT

Ian Bruce is an Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Barber-Gennum Chair in Information Technology, and an Associate Member of the department of Psychology at McMaster University.

Prior to joining McMaster in 2002, he held a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Professor Bruce obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne in Australia.

His research is focused on using engineering methods to study and model the physiological mechanisms that contribute to hearing loss and tinnitus. The results of these studies are then applied to the improvement of assistive devices for the hearing impaired such as hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Ian Bruce has been involved in developing research and academic programs in biomedical engineering at McMaster, including an undergraduate program in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering and the new McMaster School for Bioengineering.
